Series 5 in Australia...
ABC Television will begin screening Series 5 of Doc Martin on Saturday 15th October at 7.30pm. Yeehaa!

After a two-year break, the popular drama series about a curmudgeonly London GP who moves to a sleepy Cornish village returns to our screens.
Martin Clunes is back in the title role, and he is joined by regulars Caroline Catz, Ian McNeice and Joe Absolom alongside guest stars Joanna Scanlan and Robert Daws.
In this opening episode Dr Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) is struggling to come to terms with fatherhood. The baby boy born to him and his estranged partner, Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) is about to change their lives dramatically.
The curmudgeonly GP with no bedside manner planned to resume his highflying career as a consultant in London. He had packed his bags and moved out of the surgery to make way for the new GP, Dr Di Dibbs (Joanna Scanlan).
But the arrival of 'baby' - neither the doctor nor Louisa can agree on a name for their son - means Dr Ellingham has to adjust his plans. He moves into Louisa's house to help with the baby, but it is an awkward situation for both of them.
Dr Dibbs is newly qualified and excited at the prospect of moving into her first surgery, with husband Gavin (Robert Daws) as the practice manager. However Dr Ellingham begins to have serious doubts about the competency of the new GP after she misdiagnoses a patient, and dishes out prescriptions for totally inappropriate drugs. She even misdiagnoses her own illness, which almost proves fatal.

Episode Three - Monday 26th September (Possible Spoilers)...
As the new series of the comedy drama continues, sleepless nights are starting to take their toll on Dr Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) and Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz). Tempers are frayed as they try to find ways to comfort their constantly wailing baby.

Aunt Ruth (Eileen Atkins) is dealing with an intruder on the farm who has stolen the hub caps from her car. The thief is identified as Michael Dunwich (Andrew Lee Potts), who lives with his mother Shirley (Miriam Margolyes) on a neighbouring farm. Shirley makes an appointment with Martin to discuss the crippling stomach pains she has been suffering, and she tells the doc that she thinks her son is trying to poison her in order to gain possession of her house.
New receptionist Morwenna Newcross (Jessica Ransom) fails to make a good impression on Martin by arriving late on her first day. Her grandfather William (Peter Vaughan) has given her some ‘magic pills’ to help her be at her best at work, but they just make Morwenna hyperactive and Martin sacks her, thinking that she is high on drugs.
The results of the tests on Shirley show a heavy concentration of arsenic in her system. Martin immediately calls PC Penhale (John Marquez), suspecting that Shirley is indeed being poisoned. But now that there is at last a real crime for Penhale to deal with, he seems less than confident about how to proceed.

Episode Two - Monday 19th September (Possible Spoilers)...
The new series of the well-loved comedy drama continues with an episode in which Martin (Martin Clunes) finds himself dealing with the death of Aunt Joan, the demands of fatherhood and the arrival of his Aunt Ruth (Eileen Atkins). Also starring Caroline Catz, Ian McNeice and Joe Absolom.
After the departure of Dr Dibbs, Martin agrees to return to the surgery until a replacement can be found. Meanwhile, he is determined to get to grips with life as a father, and he asks Louisa (Catz) to move in with him so that he can help raise their baby – even suggesting that they could all move to London. Louisa reluctantly agrees to move in and also offers to help out on reception at the surgery. But she is unconvinced about moving to London, because she had hoped to resume her career as headmistress of the village school.

The local church is packed for Aunt Joan’s funeral, but the villagers are shocked when Martin’s eulogy turns into a health warning. Joan’s sister Ruth arrives for the service and shows that she and the curmudgeonly Martin may have a few things in common. Joan has left her the house and farm, but she is none too keen on the idea of staying in Portwenn.

Desert Island Discs....
Kirsty Young's castaway is the actor Martin Clunes.

He's graduated from being one of the "Men Behaving Badly" to a stint at The National theatre and a second career as an enthusiastic documentary presenter. It's not a career he takes too seriously though, he says: "Of course it takes some work, and there is a skill and a craft to it, but we are all monkeys in the zoo - you can go and look at the Judi Dench monkey or you can look at the Martin Clunes monkey or the Ricky Gervais monkey if you want a bit of this or a bit of that and people stroll past us and dwell or not."
Producer: Leanne Buckle.

Laughs from Dr Grumpy...

What would Victor Meldrew say? Doc Martin (ITV1, Monday) is now officially the grumpiest man on television.
Yes, it’s a keenly fought contest (Chiles and Paxman beating each other up for second place) but the Port Wenn GP, returning for a new series, now knows how to be fed up and funny at the same time, with a little bit of help from the splendid Martin Clunes.

Paddy Shennan's TV Review...
PERHAPS I could describe it as a guilty pleasure – if I didn’t hate the expression guilty pleasure.
Or perhaps I could just say that, despite everything, I love Doc Martin (ITV1, Monday).
Yes, sometimes in life it’s better not to fight things – but, instead, just let them wash over you.
You never know, they might end up comforting, soothing and amusing you.

Repeat prescription of Doc Martin...
NOW this is just what the doctor ordered – a repeat prescription of our favourite grumpy GP.
It’s been two years since Martin Clunes played Dr Martin Ellingham, but the new series picks up not long after we left them, with headteacher Louisa (Caroline Catz) giving birth to their baby.
Their relationship was on the rocks and he had decided to move back to London to resume his highflying career as a surgeon. But the arrival of ‘baby’ – neither of them can agree on a name for their son – means the Doc changes his plans.

"Now I'm not scared babies!" (BABY NAME SPOILER)
Martin Clunes tells TV Times magazine how Doc Martin's turning dad in series five of the hit ITV1 drama!
What's it been like working with the babies filming for series five of Doc Martin?
"It's brilliant – it's been a hoot. They say don't work with children and dogs – we did one tiny scene, that I'd actually written, of me getting out of the car, getting the baby out, opening the boot of the car and letting the dog out. We did it in two takes without anybody putting a foot wrong. But it's just been fun because babies are nice, you know?"

A baby later...(BABY NAME SPOILER)
Doc Martin is TV’s most miserable medic, but will the joys of fatherhood put a smile on his face?
In the new eight-part series of the ITV comedy-drama – the first for two years – the doc is reconciled with his on-off headmistress girlfriend Louisa for the sake of their baby son, who the couple are bringing up at her cottage in Portwenn, the fictional Cornish village where the series is set.
It sounds like domestic bliss, but if viewers thought this change in circumstances would herald a sunnier, happier doc, they’d better think again.

Making a Portwenn house call to the set of Doc Martin...
Patients of Dr. Martin Ellingham finally received word this week that the new season of Doc Martin will begin on Monday, 12 September, in the UK (ITV). In the States, on public television, we can now, with virtual certainty, announce that Dr. Martin Ellingham will resume making house calls in Portwenn beginning in April 2012.
Recently, Eric Luskin, Vice President of Syndication and Premium Service for American Public Television (where KERA and other public television stations acquire the broadcast rights to Doc Martin), suffered at great length on behalf of all tellyspotting readers on both sides of the pond to file this report and give us a brief glimpse of what it was like on the set as filming concluded in the town of Port Isaac earlier this summer.
